A Endoscopic Review of Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding


Abstract
A total of 159 cases of upper gastrointestinal bleeding were endoscopic reviewed who were admitted to Kochang Hospital during 1 Year period from April 1993 to March 1994.
The following results were obtained
1) The sex and age incidence of upper gastointestinal bleeding revealed a greater prevalence in male, with a ratio 7.8 male to 1 female and peak incidence was in 6th decades (38.4) .
2) The causative disease of upper gastrointesinal bleeding were gastric ulcer 46 cases (28.9%) , Esophageal varix 37 cases (23.3) , ¢¥Duodenal ulcer 27 cases (16.9) , Mallory-Weiss syndrome 7 cases (4.4%) , cdmbind 5 cases (3.1 %) , Gastric cancer 3 cases (1. 9%), undetermined 5 cases (3.1%) .
3) The mode of upper gastrointestinal bleeding consist of Hematemesis in 10.0%, Melena in 42.8%, and combination of Hematemesis and Melena in 47.2 of the cases.
4) the alcohol and smoking incidence of upper gastrointestinal bleeding revealed to alcohol in 10.7%, smoking in 14.5%, and combination of alcohol and smoking in 66.0%, no alcohol and smoking 8.8%, of the cases.
5) The seasonal distribution showed the peak prevalenc in spring (32.7%) .
6) The time of endoscopic examination was performed 86 cases within 24 hours.
